Shanghai Vocational College of Agriculture and Forestry (SHAFC) was founded in April, 2002, whose history can be traced back to 1947. Now it is the only one vocational college in Shanghai with the characteristics of urban agriculture and forestry and modern biotechnology applications.
SHAFC covers the total area of 572 mu, of which Songjiang part covers 161mu, Pudong Lingang New City Productive Training Base 411 mu and Songjiang Modern Agricultural Park 30 mu; in addition, 270 mu has been long leased in Songjiang modern agricultural park on which Shanghai Vocational Education Training Base of Ecological Agriculture and Forestry has been set up, and 620 mu leased in Fengxian District as the productive training base. As a result, the college land area available covers more than 1400 mu. The floor area of SHAFC occupies more than 120,000 m2 and its fixed assets amount to RMB 20,000,000. SHAFC is composed of six teaching departments such as Department of Horticulture and Gardening, Department of Animal Science etc. with 23 majors of Gardening Technology, Animal Medicine, and so on. There are about 4000 full-time students and more than 300 faculties including over 50 teachers with vice-senior professional titles and double-qualified teachers occupying 83%. Nowadays, the majors related to agriculture occupy more than 60%, and the corresponding students occupy more than 50%.
SHAFC sticks to the principle of serving the agriculture with its own unique characteristics. SHAFC has been awarded Model Unit of Shanghai for seven consecutive times and has ever got many honorary titles like Shanghai Civilized Campus, Shanghai Peace Unit, Shanghai Garden Unit, the National Demonstration Base for Juveniles’ Popular Science, and Shanghai Vocational Qualification Station for national vocational qualifications. The college emphasizes on docking industries for both pre-service and after-service, training and appraising more than 7000 people for rural labor every year; meanwhile, the College’s professional skill appraisal station for agricultural special types has been named as the National Outstanding Appraisal Station for Agricultural Professional Skills.
